Last year we started a fun Christmas decorating tradition of creating popcorn strings. For color we added some cranberries {I thought they would bleed, but they do not and they keep their shape past Christmas}. I love this because it is something the kiddos can do pretty much on their own, plus they love that they can snack on it as we go. And best of all, they are so excited about their creations…so excited that they tell everyone about it!
What You Need:
- Plain popcorn
- A bag of cranberries
- Thread
- Needles
- Scissors
- Marshmallows or any other fun additions
Directions:
Step 1: Cut a long string of thread, thread the needle and tie both ends together multiple times to get a big knot. You do not want the string to go through the cranberry.
Step 2: We like to start with a cranberry next to the knot and once we go through it, we go back through the starting point again to help secure the string.
Step 3: Create your own pattern. We discovered that when we used the pattern of every other one a cranberry/popcorn we went through the cranberries a lot faster. BUT there is no wrong way to do this nor do yo have to keep the pattern consistent.
Step 4: Keep stringing until you get 6 inches from the end and then tie/secure the end of the string to keep anything from falling off. Secure the other finished strings together by tying the ends together as you go or you can keep each one separated and place on the tree as they are finished.

My kiddos love making these Candy Canes and Gingerbread Men, plus I do not have to worry about them breaking any “special” ornament.
