In my previous post about Family Chores I shared how each of my kids does chores everyday and they do not get paid for them. They are contributing members in the family and are learning valuable life skills. You can check out that post HERE! That being said I do pay for other chores that go above and beyond what they already do.
Pay chores began a couple of years ago when my oldest daughter really wanted a job but at nine years old there isn’t much to do. So I came up with a job and it has to be my smartest mommy moment ever!! With a big family we have a lot of laundry and getting it folded each week is something I hate to do. There never seems to be enough hours in my day so I created a job for my kids. One child folds the laundry for the week and earns $5.00. I have to say having all of my laundry folded each week is totally worth $20.00 a month. My three oldest daughters have earned enough money to buy an IPOD. It has been a great lesson for them. They have learned that if they don’t want to work they don’t get paid and that earning money isn’t always easy. They have also learned that sometimes having a job means that you miss out on other things because you have to get your job done!
Since only one person can do that job a week often times I would here its not fair I want to earn money to so I can up with the chore jars. Inside each kids jar is 46 things that they can do to earn money. Each task is worth a dollar so if they really wanted to do them all they could earn $46 a month. I have never personally had a kid do more than 5 in a month. My kids love earning money and I love that they are learning that hard work pays and nothing is just handed to them!!!!
I have made a free printable for you so your kids can make pay chore jars as well. You can change the jobs with whatever works for your family, this is just what I have come up with. It is a list of all the things that should be done all the time but no one has time to do regularly, at least I don’t have time!! These would make a great “I’m Bored” jar too!! Every time your kid says they are bored they have to pull a paper out and do it for free!
