Teaching Kids Responsibility with Pets

Are you a dog or a cat person? I have found that people are normally one or the other. I am definitely a dog person. I grew up always having one or two dogs, so when I got married I knew I wanted to have a dog in our family. Golden retrievers were always my favorite dog so I knew that’s what I wanted. We got Bobby when he was 8 weeks old and he has been a faithful member of our family ever since. That was 10 years ago!

Riley our other dog on the other hand wandered into our garage a few years ago and she never left. We tried finding her owner and had no luck. After a week the kids were way to attached to send her away so we became a household with 2 dogs and 7 kids! Yikes!!

With such a big family and two dogs it is important to get a good quality food at a good price. We buy our PEDIGREE® Adult Dry Dog Food in a 55lb bag at SAMs Club.  My kids love it because it has a picture of a retriever like Bobby:) Right now SAMs Club is donating a bowl of dog food for a dog in need for every PEDIGREE® product purchased at SAMs.

They have to brush them, bathe them and take care of their health. A boy and his dog are so cute:)

They have to clean up the yard after them. Poop scooping isn’t the most glorious job but it has to be done. It is hard work especially in the hot summer but hard work is a great skill to learn.

Feeding them and watering them is a must of course. In our house we teach them to make sure they feed their pets before they eat themselves!

Taking them on walks helps them to stay healthy and fit. Exercise is good for the kids too.

Petting them and spending time with them is one of the most important parts. Being a good friend is always a good skill to have!
