In our house we are getting ready for General Conference this weekend. This is something my mom started when we moved into a house with stairs when I was older and I love it so much that I wanted to incorporate it into my house. Since my kiddos have started reading, I think it is a great way to use the stairs to teach and to share some fun facts about our church leaders as we prepare to watch, listen and learn this weekend.
What You Need:
- First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles Picture Set – can be purchased at the Distribution Center (online, too) or go to your local Deseret Book and they will price match the Distribution Center’s price, just make sure you mention it.
- Strips of card stock and/or colored paper
- A great hallway or set of stairs where your kiddos will pass by frequently
Directions:
Step 1: Hang (more like tape, since this is temporary 🙂 ) the pictures on the wall in a favorite hallway or on the wall of your stairs. An area that is passed frequently during the day will work awesome! (Forgive the blurry pictures. A new phone cover made them blurry. This is just a different variation on how you can line them on the stairs)
Step 2: Tape a strip of card stock below each picture. For my kiddos, I am going to write then name of each Apostle pictured above and a few fun facts on the piece of paper. This will be a fun way for them to get to know each one before the weekend comes.
Variation: After each session of General Conference, write the topic or a quote of/from each talk that particular individual gave. My mom usually leaves these up for a couple weeks after.
On a fun note, when I was talking to my mom about this I actually caught her saying, “with my children I like to do…” lol Yup, my youngest sister is still in High School and it is like having a separate family when she is almost closer in age to my oldest than to me! Regardless, I love all my family!
What Is General Conference?
In the LDS religion General Conference is a worldwide gathering twice a year of all the members to listen to Church leaders speak on a variety of spiritual topics over a 2 day period (via five different 2 hour sessions). The Church leaders speak from the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, where 21,000 people can attend in person, and all other members worldwide can view it via the internet on lds.org or broadcasted via satellite to local church buildings. You can find out more detailed information on “What is General Conference?” here. We love watching it from our home with our family!
