My very talented sister-in-law posted this craft with her family on her blog and she let me snag it. I love the idea of how simple and inexpensive it is and it is great for all ages! We will be making our own this year. I know I still remember the ormanments I made myself when I was younger and think this will be a great memory maker!
“I save every christmas card we receive every year. We reuse them as gift tags for presents and crafts.
My mom did it, so I do it.”
Supplies Needed:
- Used or new holiday cards
- Mason Jar Lids
- Scissors
- Glue
- Craft embellishments – ribbon, wire garland, pom poms, glitter, puffy paint, etc.
Directions:
Step 1: Grab your used and/or new Christmas Cards and spread them out on the table.
Step 2: Let the kids choose 2 cards for each ornament.
Step 3: Take the round insert of the lid and trace around the part of the card you want to show on the ornmament.
Step 4: After cutting out the circles, glue them to each side of the lid. Then glue the cirlce into the ring of the lid.
Step 5: Embelish as desired. They embellished the outside of the ring with fun stuff like ribbon, wire garland, pom poms, puffy paint. I love the wire garland look!
Step 6: Put the name or the Ormanment Creator and the year on each ornament.
Enjoy!

What are your favorite homemade Christmas Ornaments?
What a great idea, because usually the lids are tossed after use! Thanks
These are cute! I really like the idea of reusing the old cards. I’m including these in my Friday Favorites this week!
My niece and nephew do something similar but they use travel brochures. If they can’t find a Christmas ornament to buy as their summer vacation souvenir, they take a brochure from that place and make an ornament out of it. At Christmas, their tree is covered in reminders of the fun they had during the summer.
I love it! Such a great idea!!! I am going to have to start doing that and it is so much cheaper than buying expensive ornaments!
Thanks for linking up to A Crafty Soiree, your project is featured in tomorrow’s new linky party.
Just wondering…have you tried this with regular jar lids? If so, did you glue a picture onto the outer part of the lid, did you paint the outer part, or did you put fabric or something? I love this idea, but only have non-mason jar lids. I’ll start experimenting tomorrow!
No, we have not tried regular jar lids, but I love the idea! I imagine you could glue an image on each side if you wanted to or even cover the backside with fabric/paint/colorful paper. If you try this with regular lids, I would love to see it!
