My husband and I take turns being the one in charge of what we do for our Anniversary. A couple years ago it was my turn and my husband was unable to get time off work to leave town. In addition to that, I was 7.5 months pregnant. Since we had just moved into our house earlier that year, I decided to take the money we would have spent on a trip out of town and use it to do a surprise room makeover on our Master Bedroom. I ‘ll have to see if I still have pictures of the before, but it was 3 different shades of green on 3 walls and paper bag brown on the 4th until my husband painted all the walls bright white. It really did need a facelift!
So, with about a month to plan ahead of time, a pinterest board to collect my ideas and some help from my mom to paint and move the heavy stuff, we were able to put it together in a 24 hour period. We told my hubby that he had to stay somewhere else the night in between, so we had the night to let everything dry and air out.
Thanks to my planning, shopping around for good prices on the computer ahead of time and using gift cards, borrowing painting supplies and a lot of elbow grease from my Mom we were able to do our complete room makeover for under $200.
Supplies Needed
What We Used:
The bedspread: from Target
The chair cover: I believe was from IKEA. A little big, but we tucked it in to fit.
Wedding wall art: From our wedding. I worked for a sign company that accidentally made us gigantic pictures. We finally had space that they fit in perfectly!
Tree Art behind bed: Canvas was from Michaels and was bought in a 3 pack for 40% off.
Paint for the wall: From Home Depot. We tried 4 different colors before we got the right one.
Bed Pillows: from a “little” store that is a mix between Hobby Lobby and Lowes but for a great price called Garden Ridge. I lied! It’s like a warehouse of anything and everything you could want to do basic decor…bedding, pillows, scrubs, baskets, kitchen accessories, tables, benches, chairs, art (lots of art)…you get it. It’s awesome!
Curtains: Also from Garden Ridge (see above).
What We Reused:
Bed and regular pillows
Over stuffed chair: my mom brought it to my house from my old room growing up
Dressers: We’ve had them our whole marriage
TV: We got rid of the TV shortly after these pics, it was just way too heavy for my mom and me to move…mainly my mom, since I couldn’t lift anything. Ha!
Hope chest: We brought in from another room in the house.
How To Get Started
Step 1: Create a space where you can gather ideas of what you want your makeover space to look like. You can use a bookmark bar, a Pinterest board or clippings from magazines. I was not a fan of Pinterest until I started this project. It was a perfect way for me to get my ideas, come back to them later and even link to actual items I wanted to purchase later.
Step 2: Once you decide on the “look” you want, search for discounts and the best price. I only spent a couple days looking and finally made my decisions. Luckily, my mom introduced me to Garden Ridge because the throw pillows and curtains were the only things I was having a hard time finding because of the prices. I got a great deal!
Step 3: Prep ahead of time as much as possible, especially if you are going to make it a surprise. I think if I didn’t plan ahead of time to do this all in one day, that I would have been putting our room together for months…actually, it would probably still be unfinished. Ha!
Step 4: Clean up, make it look nice and enjoy your fresh, clean space!
This room is now everyone’s favorite space, especially my son’s. I am almost tempted to paint his room the same colors because being in this room really calms his soul. He will fall asleep immediately!
