My oldest daughter just turned 12 and the first thing she asked for was a phone. She is starting babysitting and is gone more for church activities and with friends so she feels she NEEDS one. I have always been a firm believer that kids don’t NEED cell phones and I am never just giving my child one. I have always told them they can have a cell phone when they can pay for it!
My very logical no nonsense daughter wanted to know just how much that was then! We researched and found that for just $40 dollars a month she can get 4G LTE data with unlimited talk and text with Simply Prepaid from T-Mobile. There are no overages, credit checks, or annual service contracts with this service. Perfect for a tween who wants to do it on her own. Prepaid has come a long way since it first came out. No more slow data, spotty networks and second rate phones!!
We went to our local Walmart to pick out her phone and I was pleasantly surprised at the phone selection. She got a Samsung Galaxy Avant smartphone.
Now that she has the phone she will have to make sure she earns enough money to pay for it each month. If she doesn’t make enough to pay for her $40 prepaid card each month than she wont have a phone that month. This is great motivation for her to make sure she works hard each month.
She had to have a plan on how she was going to make the money before we agreed to it. Her plan is to fold the laundry in our house which pays $20 a month. (I have been doing this for a couple of years but lately no one wanted to do it anymore because no one needed money. Woohoo for me that she wants the money again!) The rest she wants to earn babysitting or doing odd jobs for people.
I love that she came up with the plan on her own and is willing to work hard for something she wants. I want my kids to have a strong work ethic and I know if I had just given her a phone she wouldn’t appreciate it or take care of it the same as when she is using her hard earned money.
I have really enjoyed her having it. It gives me great peace of mind when she is away.
So many people don’t have home phones anymore it makes her going to babysit so much easier and I love being able to get a hold of her when she is at functions. It also makes it easier for people to get ahold of her to babysit so I don’t have to be the middle man!
